Fri Dec 22, 2017 2:13 pm
The three parties that advocated the independence of Catalonia received the majority - 70 out of 135 seats - in elections to the local parliament.
This was reported by Reuters.
The best result was the "Together for Catalonia" party, headed by former head of autonomy Carles Pucdemon. He is currently in Belgium, as the Spanish authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest.
By the number of votes in the elections, the first place was occupied by the centrist party "Citizens", which stands for the unity of the country. She can claim 37 seats in the new parliament.
Pucchemon, commenting on the results of the election, said that "the Catalan Republic won the monarchy," El Espanol reports.
He also called for the abolition of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which gave the central government the power to resolve the conflict after the referendum.
"From tomorrow, article 155 should be discontinued, political prisoners are released, and in our country (in the sense of themselves and a few associates, ed.) There must be conditions for return," said the former head of Catalonia.
Pucchemon also called for "to take note" of the election results on December 21. They, in his opinion, testify that the prime minister of Spain must change the approach to the situation with Catalonia.
On December 21, Catalonia held early parliamentary elections , announced after the withdrawal of Carles Pucdemon's government.
On October 27, the Spanish Senate suspended the autonomy of Catalonia , applying 155 article of the constitution. Thus, the region introduced a direct management of Madrid. Article 155 was first applied since 1978.
As a result, Madrid dissolved parliament and the Government of Catalonia.
On October 31, the Spanish Constitutional Court suspended the Declaration of Independence of Catalonia.
On October 1, a referendum on independence from Spain took place in Catalonia. It was reported that the Spanish police used rubber bullets against supporters of the independence of Catalonia. Premier of Spain Mariano Raho refused to call the vote in Catalonia a referendum on self-determination.
